SAT Writing
The writing section includes both multiple-choice questions and a direct writing measure in the form of an essay.
a)Short Essay
The short essay measures your ability to:
1) Organize and express ideas clearly
2) Develop and support the main idea
3) Use appropriate word choice and sentence structure
b)Multiple-Choice
The multiple-choice writing questions measure your ability to:
1) Improve sentences and paragraphs
2) Identify errors (such as diction, grammar, sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, proper word usage, and wordiness)
SAT Critical Reading
The critical reading section, formerly known as the verbal section, includes short as well as long reading passages. Questions can be based on one, or sometimes two, reading passages. Some questions are not based on reading passages, but ask you to complete sentences.
SAT Math
The SAT includes mathematics topics from up through a third-year college preparatory course, such as exponential growth, absolute value, and functional notation. It also places emphasis on such topics as linear functions, manipulations with exponents, and properties of tangent lines. Important skills such as estimation and number sense are measured through the multiple-choice and student response (grid-in) questions.
The mathematics section has two types of questions:
a) Multiple Choice
b) Student-Produced Response Questions
AP Calculus
The AP calculus AB Exam and BC Exam assesses student's mastery of AB calculus and BC calculus concepts and techniques respectively. Both courses represent college-level mathematics for which most colleges grant advanced placement & credit.
1) Calculus ABis designed to be taught over a full high school academic year. Calculus AB can be covered within a year even while spending some time on elementary functions. Adequate preparation for Calculus AB, however, requires dedicated time on topics in differential and integral calculus. AP exams lay special emphasis on these topics.
2)Calculus BC is designed to be offered by schools that are able to complete all the prerequisites before the course. Calculus BC spans one full year in the calculus of functions of a single variable. The course content for Calculus BC has certain additional topics apart from the same for Calculus AB.
AP CHEMISTRY
The advanced placement (AP) Chemistry test examines students' in depth knowledge of AP Chemistry concepts. This course represents college-level chemistry, for which most colleges grant advanced placement and credit.
This course is designed to be the equivalent of general Chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. For some students, this course is a prerequisite to enable them to register for courses in other fields. For other students, it serves the mandatory science laboratory hours and provides free time for other courses.
The students taking up AP Chemistry should attain a depth of understanding the essentials and a logical aptitude in dealing with chemical problems. The college Chemistry curriculum differs from secondary school Chemistry with respect to the kind of textbook used, the topics covered, the emphasis on chemical calculations and the mathematical formulation of principles, and the kind of laboratory work done by students. Quantitative differences are due to the number of topics covered, the time spent on the course by students and the nature and the variety of experiments done in the laboratory. To develop the requisite intellectual and laboratory skills, AP Chemistry students need a sufficient amount of classroom and laboratory time. In addition, students may need to spend enough time in studying besides the class room learning.
AP BIOLOGY
Primary emphasis in an AP Biology course is on development of an understanding of concepts rather than on memorizing terms and technical details. The design of the AP Biology course is such that students can take it after finishing off first courses in high school Biology and Chemistry. It is aimed to impart students with concepts, knowledge and analytical skills.
This course is equivalent to a college introductory biology course usually taken by biology majors during their first year. Some AP students are permitted to undertake upper-level courses in biology as a fresher or to register for courses for which biology is a prerequisite. Some students attend a laboratory Science course and undertake other courses to pursue their majors.
AP PHYSICS
The AP Physics Exams are designed to test students' achievement in the AP Physics courses. These courses are intended to be representative of courses commonly offered in colleges and universities, but they do not necessarily correspond to courses at any particular institution. Nevertheless, it provides a systematic introduction to the main principles of Physics and emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability.
SSAT
The Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is a test administered to students in grades 5 to 11 who will be applying for admissions into independent or private junior high and high schools. The SSAT measures the student’s ability to solve problems in Mathematics, Reading Comprehension and Verbal sections. The test is administered on two levels: the Lower level for students in grades 5-7 and the Upper level for students in grades 8-11.For grades 5-7 scores in each section range from 440-710.The scores for each of the sections are added together for the composite score, with 2130 being a perfect SSAT score. Scores for the upper level in each section range from 500-800 and the perfect composite score is 2400.
SSAT consists of two parts: a brief essay and a multiple choice test. SSAT is 2 hours and 35 minutes long and consists of five sections.
PSAT
The PSAT/NMSQT, or Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, is test taken by students in junior high and administered by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test and determines the eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship Program. . Note: Only students in eleventh grade are eligible to enter NMSC scholarship programs. PSAT/NMSQT measures your performance in specific areas such as critical reading, math, and writing PSAT/NMSQT consists of five sections: a writing section, two math sections and two critical reading sections. PSAT/NMSQT is 2 hours and 10 minutes long and consists of five sections.
ACT
The American College Test or ACT is a standardized college admission test that measures the student’s abilities in the core subjects taught in high school. ACT helps to impartially assess a student's potential for success in college and assist colleges in admission by providing a standardized measurement of the ability of students from different schools across the world.
Individuals with different educational backgrounds and ages can take the ACT, including middle school students, high school graduates, and adults who want to return to college. A student can take the ACT more than once and select the scores to be sent to colleges for review.
ACT is a three and a half hour test and has four mandatory subject tests- English, Reading, Mathematics, and Science, and one optional 30 minute Writing. The test has 215 questions.
ISEE
The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is a three-hour admission test for entrance into grades five through twelve. The ISEE consists of carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student’s capability for learning, and reading comprehension and mathematicsThe ISEE is administered at three levels: a Lower Level for students currently in grades four and five, a Middle Level for students in grades six and seven and an Upper Level for students in grades eight to eleven.
GCSE
The General Board of Secondary Education is a standard academic qualification in numerous subjects in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Generally taken by students of the age group 15-16 years, the international version of this examination is known as I.G.C.S.E. In Secondary schools, G.C.S.E is available in a variety of subjects and these subjects are decided by the students themselves in the year 9. Since the beginning of Class 10th, the students can take up these subjects as their courses of study.
The final two years of compulsory schooling is officially termed as Key Stage 4 and incorporates GCSEs in maintained schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - normally known as Year 10 and Year 11 in England and Wales, and Year 11 and Year 12 in Northern Ireland, when pupils are aged between 14 and 16. GCSEs are not compulsory examinations, however, they are the most common and popular examinations. English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education and physical education are a part of curriculum during Key Stage 4 in state schools. In England and Northern Ireland, information communication technology (ICT), and citizenship are also a part of national curriculum (in state schools as well). Welsh (as a first/ second language) is studied in Wales.
Five GCSE Boards provide the facility of GCSEs in England namely:
* Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA)
* Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA)
* Edexcel
* Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR)
* Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC)They specify the course content, exam questions, assess the projects and mark papers. Schools can choose one subject from one of these boards and thus a student can do different subjects from different boards. Throughout GCSE a student has to undergo controlled assessment and the time and date can be decided by consulting the teacher.
IGCSE
IGCSE is the international version of GCSE and can be taken anywhere in the world, and which incorporates certain additional options as well. For instance, more options are provided relating to coursework and the language used. Students undertaking GCSEs in secondary education can combine their degree with other qualifications, such as BTECs, the DiDA, or diplomas. Education to GCSE level is often a requisite for students who study for A-levels, which in turn is a common requirement for entry to university. Students can choose varied number of subjects for their GCSEs. There are some 50 different subjects that are available to be taken and thus students have a lot of flexibility in choosing subjects they are good at. Most GCSE courses are worth one GCSE, however, there are certain subjects which are worth half GCSE or two GCSE.
A LEVEL
The A-Level or Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (GCE) , is a qualification offered by education institutions in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and by a small minority of institutions, typically private, in Scotland. (In Scotland, students usually take Highers and Advanced Highers of the Scottish Qualifications Certificate instead). A levels are usually studied over a two year period and are widely recognised around the world, as well as being the qualification that is the most common method used by British Universities to determine an applicant's suitability for academic subjects.
A-level coursework can vary in terms of subjects studied. For instance, the GCE can be applied to subjects ranging from art and design to business and science. As a result of Curriculum 2000, A-level coursework involves six modules that are studied for two years. All modules are carefully evaluated by student’s performance on exam papers and internal course offerings. Unlike students in the United States, A-level students take only three to four courses in their final year. This has been criticized for giving students the opportunity to select subjects that are closely-related or that they find to be easy. Hence, these students are encouraged to take contrasting courses in order to balance their curriculum and keep a competitive edge.
Five GCE Boards provide the facility of GCEs/ A-Levels in England namely:
• Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA)
• Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA)
• Edexcel
• Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR)
• Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC)
AS Level
Cambridge International AS Levels have half the content of the corresponding Cambridge International A Level and may be completed in one year. Schools can offer Cambridge International AS Level as a qualification in its own right or as a stage on the way to Cambridge International A Level. Students can study Cambridge International AS Level alongside other subjects to increase breadth in the curriculum and build further knowledge and understanding to other subjects they are studying at Cambridge International A Level.
IB DIPLOMA
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a nonprofit educational foundation based in Switzerland, offers Diploma Programme for students in the Final two years of secondary school.
The educational philosophy of the organization is found in its mission statement adopted in 1996: Through comprehensive and balanced curricula, coupled with challenging assessments, the International Baccalaureate organization aims to assist schools in their endeavours to develop the individual talents of young people and teach them to relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigour and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideas of international understanding and responsible citizenship, to the end that IB students may become critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.
